“I remember a moment of Harry as a four-year-old, travelling down to Gloucester one weekend. He and his brother had an argument in the back seat of the car being refereed by the nanny.

“And in the end, Harry said: ‘You’ll be king one day, I won’t. Therefore I can do what I want!’

“Diana said ‘Where the hell did he get that from?’

Harry’s revealing comment hints at the complex relationship between the siblings which has become severely strained in recent times.

Wharfe continued: “You have to remember he’s one of the most popular members of the Royal family and we watched and witnessed the wedding in Windsor and everyone said it was the future of the monarchy.

“And suddenly it seems to be falling apart.”

Wharfe was bodyguard to Prince William and Prince Harry from 1986 and became Princess Diana’s personal protection officer in 1988, an arrangement which continued until 1993.

In 1997 Wharfe oversaw security at Princes Diana’s funeral and in the 1998 New Year’s Honours list the top cop was made a member of the prestigious Victoria Order for his services to the Queen, reports the Telegraph.

His book “Diana – Closely Guarded Secret” was a huge bestseller when it was published in 2016 but the book’s explosive revelations are believed to have angered the Palace.
